Ford Wins Six ‘What Van?’ Awards
You ever notice that everyone (not us) does awards at the end of the year? Seems like a weird coincidence. Cynical people will say that these outlets are selling their awards and I don’t know that I’ve ever seen definitive proof of that. In most cases, you can assume the journalists doling out the awards are being honest in how they evaluate vehicles.
What gets sold is not the award itself, necessarily, but the accolades. Did you know that if I said “The Skoda Superb is the greatest car to ever exist and will bring you untold riches and the love of everyone you desire and the fealty of everyone you despise” and Skoda wanted to use that quote in an ad or a billboard they’d have to pay the Autopian money for that? I don’t say this to completely shade these awards as readers want to hear what car gets what and it makes for good copy. I just think it’s important context.
The exception to this, of course, has to be the fine folks at British van rag ‘What Van?‘ I am legitimately curious about their choices and respect the van love. I’ve been watching them do this for years and I usually agree with their results. They handed out six awards to Ford this year, including:
- Large Van of the Year: Ford E-Transit
- Van of the Year (overall): Ford E-Transit
- Medium Van of the Year: Ford Transit Custom
- Used Van of the Year: Ford Transit Custom
- Editor’s Choice: Ford’s ‘Make it Visible’ Suicide Prevention campaign
- What Van? Hall Of Fame Inductee: Mandy Dean, Ford of Britain/Ireland’s Commercial Vehicle Director
A bit of controversy, though, cannot be ignored.
Ford E-Transit won the big overall award, but it was actually the commercial version of the VW ID.Buzz that won the electric van category. I can only imagine the gasps in the crowd during the lunchtime ceremony.

It’s late at night. You’re happily asleep dreaming of a pristine Isuzu Impulse RS. Suddenly, you’re jolted awake by your kid who is claiming she can’t go back to sleep without ‘Cho-Cho-Chokey’ a cat she hasn’t played with in three years. You go digging through their closet and find an old laptop. A thought hits you like a jolt of lighting! Back in college your friend couldn’t pay for pizza and gave you two Bitcoin for it. What Is Turkey’s Game?
Russia continues to make money off of energy exports even with all the sanctions, which is why Western governments in the G7 recently announced a price cap on Russian oil that forces tankers carrying the black stuff to accept a price of $60 or less or risk losing insurance from European providers.
According to Reuters, this is causing some issues. Specifically, tankers are lining up at the Bosphorus strait waiting for Turkish authorities to let them pass. The Turkish government says this is due to wanting to make sure these tankers have proper insurance related to the potential change in the value of their cargo. The G7 governments (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US) say it’s not on them:

So what’s up here? Turkey is both a country and, historically, a lever that exists between Western governments and Russia. It’s been this way since the end of WWII and the biggest winner from Russia’s illegal occupation of Ukraine has been Turkey and the company’s President Recep Erdogan.
What’s not clear, immediately, is what Erdogan wants. We’ll probably find out soon.

Subaru WRX Variants: Exterior
To begin, let’s start off by comparing their dimensions. For the sedan, all of its trims are 4,670mm long, 1,825mm wide, and 1,465mm in height. These also have a wheelbase length of 2,675mm.
The Subaru WRX Sedan
The WRX wagon variants in turn, are 4,755mm long, 1,795mm wide, and 1,500mm in height. Their wheelbases then span 2,670mm.
In summary, the WRX wagon trims are longer but narrower than the sedan versions. They are also a bit taller, though their wheelbases are marginally shorter.
The WRX Sedan from the rear
When it comes to curb weight, the new WRX progressively gets heavier as you go through its variant lineup. The entry-level WRX Sedan MT is the lightest at 1,515kg, whereas the top-spec WRX Wagon tS EyeSight is the heaviest at 1,629kg.
Concerning exterior equipment though, all trims come standard with LED front fog lamps, LED rear fog lamps, LED taillights, power-folding side mirrors, and rear bumper with air outlets. All also come with UV protection glass, though only the wagon trims come with this feature rear quarter windows.
The all-new WRX Wagon
In turn, only the WRX sedan trims have front fender air outlets as well as a side sport garnish. The sedan trims also have twin dual tail mufflers, whereas the wagon variants come with twin tail mufflers only.
But when it comes to sunroofs, only the WRX Sedan CVT, WRX Sedan tS, and the WRX Wagon tS are equipped with a power-sliding, tilt-adjustable glass sunroof. The sedan also gets a trunk spoiler, while the wagon gets a roof spoiler.
The WRX Wagon from the rear
Lastly, all WRX trims use a set of 18-inch wheels. These then come with a different design depending on the trim. Of note, the top-spec tS variants for both the sedan and wagon versions are the only trims that may come with the machined premium aluminum set.
Subaru WRX Variants: Interior
Regardless of body style and variant, the 2023 WRX can comfortably seat up to five occupants. All variants also come with rain-sensing wipers, sport pedals, a push-to-start button, a dual-zone automatic climate control system with rear vents, as well as a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
The sedan version’s rear seats
For the seats though, only the WRX Sedan MT gets fabric seats, while the WRX Wagon GT-S gets leather seats, In turn, the top-spec tS trims get ultra-suede.
Moreover, the 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat is only available on the WRX Sedan CVT variants, and the WRX wagon variants.
Regarding cargo capacity, the WRX sedan can fit up to 414 liters, while the wagon version can handle up to 492 liters by default. For the wagon though, its capacity can be expanded further thanks to its 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats. And yes, this isn’t available on the sedan version.
Manual vs. Automatic
In practice, at least one of these two promises made by the 2023 Subaru WRX is borne out in the real world. A stopwatch reveals that the CVT-equipped car is definitely quicker to 60 mph from a dead stop, although it’s a question of a tenth of a second or two. Drag racers will take note, however, that the manual will eke out a win over a full quarter-mile stretch, where the human factor involved in shifting plays less of a role. Both cars feature the same 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which generates 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.
While a stoplight surge might be in the cards with the automatic WRX, the car’s fuel economy doesn’t live up to expectations. In fact, according to the EPA, the CVT actually drops efficiency by a single mile per gallon on the highway as compared to the clutch-equipped sedan. This flies in the face of the CVT magic executed by Subaru with the similarly-sized Impreza, which for 2023 is considerably more frugal when equipped with its continuously-variable setup versus its five-speed manual.
In my time with the vehicle, I found the WRX’s fuel consumption to be even worse than the 21 mpg combined average found on its window sticker. The reason was easy enough to ascertain: Although the CVT offers a lightning leap forward off the line, while underway it displays a frustrating inability to keep up with the four-cylinder engine’s power band. This leads to all sorts of full-throttle hemming and hawing as the transmission yo-yo’s its way to targeting maximum output, even when set to its “Sport #” (Sport Sharp) mode.
To combat this sluggishness at speed, Subaru built a series of “virtual” gear ratios into the CVT that can be accessed by way of steering wheel-mounted paddles. While they do offer the opportunity for your human brain to outthink the laggardly ghost in the WRX’s machine, it’s a far less immediate shifting experience than what is found in even a traditional torque converter automatic.
On any model you choose, the chassis and all-wheel-drive grip will serve you well.

Performance from tip-to-tail
Born of a legend and built on three decades of innovation, the All-Wheel Drive Subaru WRX is the most thrilling yet in the storied history of the iconic WRX. Performance enhancements start with increased power, courtesy of a 2.4-litre direct injected turbocharged horizontally-opposed Boxer engine, while the ultra-low centre of gravity and improved*Compared to previous WRX generations power-to-weight ratio support dynamic stability and acceleration. The designed body also delivers a chassis boasting increased rigidity for improved*Compared to previous generations overall control, steering response and cornering ability.
The introduction of the Subaru Performance Transmission, you truly have to feel it to believe the true sports car acceleration and efficiency that it has to offer.
The Mods
Nothing super heavy but also a bit more elaborate than a bolt-on cold-air intake. Let’s start with the biggest and most noticeable one: that rear wing. Boy, it looks good, don’t it? Quite similar to the one on the mega-dollar P25, the wing makes the WRX look like it means business. It’s impossible not to think this is how a new STI could look.
While the front end was left alone, the car’s profile got plenty of love from Prodrive. Custom fender flares widen the car by 30 mm and are painted to match, giving the car more visual oomph. Of course, there’s also a sweet set of gunmetal gray Prodrive wheels also borrowed from the P25. These are wrapped in 255/35 R19 Bridgestone Potenza Sport tires which provide exceptional grip without sacrificing ride comfort or multi-season performance. Peeking out from behind those Prodrive wheels is another considerable upgrade to the WRX: AP Racing brakes. The front gets six-piston calipers clamping down on 380-mm rotors while the rear gets four-piston units with 343-mm rotors. All four corners get sport pads for better braking performance.
Stiffer anti-roll bars in the front and rear as well as upgraded suspension bushings help keep the car balanced during cornering, while Prodrive-tuned Bilstein dampers and lowered springs improve the car’s dynamics while giving it a much sportier look.
Under the hood, a revised ECU offers a considerable bump of 30 horsepower and 33 lb-ft of torque over the stock car’s 271 hp and 258 lb-ft, bringing it to a grand total of 301 ponies and 291 lb-ft of torque. Nothing too wild here but just enough to make things interesting.
Everything inside the cabin remains the same, with the exception of the front seats. The driver and passenger stock units are replaced with sweet-looking (and very comfortable) Sparco SPX buckets. These offer enhanced bolstering for better body support during cornering, but they never felt intrusive even for a big guy like me.

The journey of an icon. The Subaru WRX
It was the original turbocharged “pocket rocket” when launched in Japan in 1992 and since then, the Subaru WRX has become a global phenomenon.
The three letters WRX, stand for World Rally Experimental, and marked a serious assault by Subaru on the World of Rallying. WRX became an instant icon, winning three consecutive manufacturer’s championships (and the first Japanese automobile company to do so), plus a host of other success including class wins in the 24-hour Nurburgring race. For a generation, rally is defined by the blue and gold colours that is Subaru.
In Australia WRX dominated the Australian Rally Championship (ARC) with ten consecutive driver’s championships and seven manufacturers’ championship crowns that only came to an end following Subaru’s undefeated withdrawal from the championship in 2005. A come back in 2016 saw WRX take another championship win proving once again that the WRX is a force to be reckoned with.
Subaru WRX Variants: Conclusion
To put this simply, the WRX Wagon will become the choice for you if you need the extra space for cargo.
The WRX Wagon’s cavernous trunk
The sedan variants in turn, are considerably lighter than the wagon variants, so if what you’re after is something fun to drive, then these might be the ones for you. Then again, do note that all trims use the same engine, and all come with all-wheel-drive.
If you particularly like to row through gears though, the only variant for you is the WRX MT. This one however, lacks the EyeSight driver-assist suite, which is present on all the CVT trims.
The WRX Sedan’s trunk
Also remember that the tS trims, while luxurious and better equipped, are indicated by Subaru as “indent orders” so these might take a while longer to get to you.

Great power: tick.
Standard Boxer Engine & Symmetrical AWD
The 2023 WRX wouldn’t be a Subaru without its most prominent features: A turbocharged Boxer engine in the front and a symmetrical all-wheel drivetrain underneath. The new WRX has a 2.4-liter horizontally-opposed gasoline engine that pumps out 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. of torque, the latter arriving from 2,000 to 5,000 rpm.
Sweetening the pot is a standard six-speed manual with improved shift quality and optimized gear ratios, making the most of the engine’s low-end torque. Those who don’t want to manually row gears can opt for Subaru’s “performance” automatic transmission, essentially a CVT with paddle shifters and revamped software to offer rev-matching downshifts.

Subaru wrx discontinued 2023
The market for automobiles is still moving toward electrification. Subaru is therefore concentrating on how its upcoming sports and performance cars should change to satisfy the evolving market demands. The norms and standards made this choice for greenhouse gasses (GHG), zero-emission vehicles (ZEV), and corporate average fuel economy (CAFE).
The world is moving quickly toward electricity. By 2030, many automakers envision having an entirely electric lineup. Subaru Corporation has been hesitant to adopt a fully electric lineup. The Boxer engine and hybrid battery technology are the most effective ways to meet emissions and fuel efficiency criteria.
But when California re-established its GHG emission rules and ZEV sales requirement, many things changed.
The new law in California has altered what Subaru can sell in one of its biggest markets. Their announcement compelled Subaru Corporation to look into “options for the next-generation Subaru WRX STI, especially electrification.”
The United States or any other market will not receive the 2023 Subaru WRX STI. The next-generation STI was killed by greenhouse gasses, zero-emission vehicles, and corporate average fuel economy (CAFE), and it will never be revived.
Subaru WRX Variants
There are a variety of 2022 Subaru WRX STI models, each with its own unique features. The STI is the performance model, with a powerful engine and stiff suspension. The Limited has a more luxurious feel, with features like leather seats and a better sound system. Other models include the WRX Sport Touring, WRX Limited Edition, and the Impreza Sedan. 2018 Subaru WRX

Subaru WRX
VW Jetta GLI (228 л.

list of factors explains why Subaru is discontinuing the WRX STI
- It’s unlikely that the most recent WRX line will outlive other generations. Subaru selected the WRX range to start cleaning up its act. Shortly, we will see more hybrid choices. The alternatives are either a fully electric WRX or a new EV platform by the decade’s end.
- It does seem logical that they have decided to discontinue high-performance vehicles if electrification is their long-term goal. Even some of the slower electric vehicle platforms on the market can compete with a gas-powered STI. Therefore, it makes sense to put this specific vehicle on hold until they develop an electric platform capable of doing it justice and possibly competing in motorsport.
- One clear justification for doing away with STIs is emissions, and CAFE is at the core of that. If they had produced the STI, a highly thirsty car, mainly when driven hard, their fuel economy result would have been significantly lower.
- The WRX is currently in its second generation. So if you’re searching for a sportier model, you’re in luck. The Boxer still has 270 horsepower, which is more than adequate. It is still available with a six-speed manual and four-wheel drive. However, all customizations are optional, as are STI badges if you genuinely want them.
- The WRX STI’s discontinuation does not mean that the desired STI nameplate is no longer used. It will endure in Japan and Australia with the Levorg STI Sport. Additionally, Subaru suggested that it might later return as an electric vehicle. The STI E-RA concept, unveiled earlier this year, indicates that the STI nameplate may get its line of exclusively electric sports cars.
- Subaru must disclose how its relationship with Toyota would have affected its choice. Toyota has just released the GR Yaris, so introducing a new STI would undoubtedly have impacted Yaris sales. The 86 and BRZ coexist in a bubble of some kind. Because it was a joint business, it is simple to justify. Two distinct models, the Yaris and the WRX would have ended up competing with one another for sales.
- Small-performance cars have been less popular for some years. People are choosing practical pickups and crossovers in increasing numbers. But it’s not just that; Subaru has also struggled to keep up with the competition. Their build quality and performance fall are short of hot hatches from rival manufacturers, such as the GR Yaris.
- The pandemic-related chip shortage is another aspect that had a minor influence on their choice. Existing models already struggle and have long delays. Therefore, a brand-new model at this time will be at the very end of the lengthy line.
- The primary marketing strategy Subaru employed in the past was motorsport. The early STI models were unbeatable on the WRC circuit and even performed admirably when driven by privateers. They last participated in the WRC for more than ten years, and part of this is their efforts to improve their reputation as a manufacturer.
Subaru WRX History
The Subaru WRX is a unique car because it has been around for so long. The WRX was first produced in 1995 and since then, it has been released as a sedan, coupe, wagon, and performance variant. The Subaru WRX 2004 started as a rally car and then transitioned to street use. In the early days of the WRX, it was not well known or popular. However, over time the WRX has developed a loyal fan base. There are many reasons why the Subaru WRX is such a successful vehicle. First of all, it is affordable for most people. Second, it offers great performance for its price range. Third, it is versatile and can be used for many different purposes. 2015 Subaru WRX

О Subaru

Subaru WRX Variants: Engine & Performance
Under the hood, all 2023 Subaru WRX variants use a 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer-four gasoline engine that’s capable of producing up to 271 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque. All variants are all-wheel-drive, but only the entry-level WRX variant gets a six-speed manual gearbox. The rest meanwhile uses a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with paddle shifters.

All trims then use the same suspension types. For the front, they all use a MacPherson strut for the front, and a multi-link type for the rear. All also come with disc brakes for all four wheels. The entry-level MT variant then gets a hand-operated manual parking brake, whereas the rest come with an electronic parking brake.
For performance stats, the WRX sedan variant with the manual tranny can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.0 seconds, while the CVT versions can do that at a slightly slower time of 6.1 seconds. Both versions, though, can reach a top speed of 215 km/h. Of note, the figures mentioned here are according to Subaru.
