Volkswagen trademarked the name e-Beetle recently, suggesting that the legendary Bug might be reinvented as an electric car. Under those circumstances, Wolfsburg’s lawyers might be eager to take the case to court. Oliver Tidman of BRIFFA, a law firm specializing in intellectual property, told Auto Express “There is no international copyright law, but there are international agreements such as the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works.
These require countries to recognize each other’s intellectual property laws. Copyright laws vary from one country to another, and while the rules may differ, the principles are similar.” But even if you’re convinced that a Chinese company has infringed on your copyright, pursuing legal action through the Chinese courts against companies isn’t always easy, especially companies in which the Chinese Government may have an ownership interest.

Initially, the Punk Cat was slated to have a single electric motor with 169 horsepower but as the concept got closer to production, Great Wall gave its creation a new electric motor from United Electronic that produces 295 horsepower. Two different battery packs will be available. Entry-level models come with a 47.8 kWh battery, resulting in a range of 250 miles. Higher-end models will have a 59.1 kWh battery that yields 310 miles of range. There have been internet rumblings that a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive version with over 500 horsepower is coming, but specifics are scarce at this time.
Already on sale in China, Great Wall also has design patents for its vehicles in Europe and Australia, though it’s highly doubtful that the United States will ever see these Chinese EVs. While advertisements for Great Wall/Ora electric vehicles have already been showing up in the United Kingdom, definitive information about when the cars might be available for purchase is scarce. The Ora Punk Cat starts at just 103,900 yuan ($14,943) and goes up to 143,900 yuan ($20,696). Ironically, the Punk Cat may end up being too big for Europe’s narrow streets, unlike the original “people’s car”, the Beetle. What do you think of the Punk Cat? Obviously, the most noticeable difference between the Punk Cat and the original Beetle is that Punk Cat is a four-door hatchback whereas the Beetle had only two doors. The Punk Cat is also much larger than the Beetle that inspired its looks. The ORA Punk Cat is 28 inches longer, 8.0 inches wider, and has a 20-inch longer wheelbase than the original Beetle. The large difference in size may be part of the reason why Great Wall, ORA’s parent company, is not concerned with a lawsuit coming from Volkswagen.

The extra size allows for an interior that looks both spacious and practical. Two-tone vintage-looking upholstery and the liberal use of chrome give the Punk Car an elegant and retro vibe. Surreptitiously missing from the toned-down production car is the wild black and white checkered floor, as well as the copious amounts of gold trim that were present on the concept vehicle. But the star of the Punk Cat’s cabin is undoubtedly the dashboard with its huge twin-screen setup in the center and passenger side. Lastly, the doors appear to be electrically released, similar to a Tesla.
