2023 Acura Integra Specs

All Integra models come standard with a 10.2-inch digital gauge display that the driver can customize. Both the 7.0-inch and 9.0-inch infotainment displays that come standard on the Integra do away with the annoying touchpad controller that is present on other Acura models.

The larger touch screen is a part of the Technology package for A-Spec cars, which also includes three USB-C charging outlets dispersed throughout the interior, a 5.3-inch head-up display, and a wireless Smartphone charging pad.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on all models; however wireless connectivity for those functions is only available in vehicles with the Technology package. The Highs and Lows

That manual transmission, I’m telling you, is a damn delight to operate and makes the whole car feel so much more fun to drive than it’d be if you only had two pedals. Don’t let me shame you out of liking automatics, but if you haven’t driven stick in a while or you’re intimidated by the prospect, this car’s very forgiving when you don’t want driving to be «work» while also being immensely satisfying to fling when you’re out driving for joy.

The engine and chassis didn’t leave me with many criticisms either—I really only wish I’d had more time to drive this thing.

As for the Integra’s faults, well, despite seeming roomy, it’s a tough proposition for four adults. I’m six feet tall and while I had plenty of legroom in the back, my head was hitting the ceiling. Fitting my dog’s kennels was tough, and she didn’t like the leather material the rear seats were made of. I, however, loved the front seats and their microsuede inserts so I think I’d just make my mutt sit on a blanket or something if I bought one of these.

I also had a lot of trouble with the wireless charger—even casual backroad driving would cause my phone to come off its pad.

Integra coming back in 2022

On August 21, Acura has revealed that the brand will revive the Integra in 2022. After unveiling the NSX Type S at the Monterey Car Week, Acura launched a drone show in the night sky, showing the word “2022” with a silhouette of the original 1986 model to imply the return of the Integra.

In response to that, many Japanese fans of the car have positively reacted to the news, but it is unsure whether the car will actually be launched in Japan too since Honda has kept silent about it. And unfortunately, it is extremely unlikely that the new Integra will come to Japan.

The biggest reason I think is because of the difference between the Acura brand in the United States, and the Honda brand in Japan.

Acura was born in 1986, exclusive for the North American market at first. In the same year, the brand launched the Legend and Integra. Honda and Acura people have always said that the brand isn’t just a high-end brand, but also a brand that emphasizes sportiness.

That was why the price range for the Integra was set to be almost equal to that of the Honda Civic. Ever since the Civic was introduced with its CVCC engine to fight the Muskee act, buyers in the North American market have always thought of the Civic as a reliable, yet affordable car for the people.

On the other hand, Honda’s sporty image was weaker in the United States, mainly because of the lack of recognition of F1 with other factors to follow. The Acura brand was born with the aim of creating a sportier brand than its parent.

And seeing the success of the brand, Toyota and Nissan decided to launch their own top-tier brand for the same market, Lexus and Infiniti, respectively.

Those brands were designed to compete directly against high-class European brands such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW to differentiate from Honda’s counterpart. But in the late 90s to early 00s, the world saw a huge shift of trend to SUVs and that made Acura become a luxury brand just like other Japanese brands.

Against this backdrop, the Integra was reintroduced as the Acura RSX with a three-door coupe body. And just like its predecessors, prices were kept low to the Honda brand. We could say the RSX was an important bridge between Honda and Acura for users.

Later on, with the expansion of the Chinese market, the brand rapidly grew to a global luxury brand, and the need for an affordable sports car inside the brand disappeared as time went by.

So why the Integra now?

Moreover, the fact that Acura announced the new model with the Integra name instead of the RSX is also very curious.

The possible reason for this could be a major restructuring of the Acura brand.

The Acura Integra Type S, discontinued in 2006

Looking at the numbers, Honda’s overall sales in the United States recorded 135,542 units in July. On the other hand, Acura only sold 14,850 units, only 11% of Honda’s sales. Breaking down the sales, the RDX accounted for 39% of the total with the MDX following with 29%. The mid-size TLX sedan came in third place for 19%, the ILX for 13%, and the halo NSX, facing its discontinuation in 2022, only sold 7 units.

In order for Acura to boost up its sales, now is the time to think about revamping its lineup. In addition, Honda has set a global goal of achieving a full-electric lineup by 2040, and the company also needs to shift electric also in the North American market, the company’s main battlefield.

The real reason why Honda decided to revive the car as the Acura Integra should be because the electrical shift made the company difficult to differentiate the brand from its competitors. Rather than releasing as the Honda Integra really means something to decide the brand’s fortune.

Honda has already announced the launch of the Honda Prologue, an electric SUV, with its Acura sibling in 2024. It is unlikely the next Integra will be pure electric but it might come with an electrical powertrain like the e:HEV hybrid system to bring both electrification and sportiness.

As you can see, the revival of Integra is an important project for Honda’s strategy for the next decade. And sadly, its home market is not an important market where sub-compact and minivans are the mainstream for their sales.

However, while the S660, Clarity, Odyssey, Legend, and NSX are ending their time in the Japanese market, it is true that there are some cars like the all-new Civic Hatchback with 6-speed stick shift are somewhat hanging on to restore the sportiness of the company.

Integra Type S Wants To Party Like Its 1999!

The exterior styling of the Integra Type S shares some core themes with the standard Integra but Acura designers knew that this spunky little compact needed more cooling and that’s why they completely reworked the entire front end to achieve this goal. The lower bumper has larger intakes to help channel cold air to where its needed the most while the hood gets an integrated hood scoop. The Integra Type S is 2.8-inches wider than a normal Integra and some of that width is on display with its new wheel flares which accommodate larger rubber that’s mounted on 19-inch alloy wheels.

The rear styling also gets tweaked with the rear of the car featuring a new diffuser, trunk mounted spoiler and a large set of triple exhaust tips that are mounted to a free flowing exhaust system. The package is largely what you see on the Civic Type R but Acura claims that tweaks to its set of pipes allow the car to breathe better and to also make better noises when placed in Sport + mode. The exterior also gets embossed Integra monikers on the front and rear end which is a nod to its 1990s era ancestors and is a welcome slice of nostalgia on the otherwise futuristic design.

The interior also gets in on the act too with Acura designers using premium materials throughout. Perforated leather is used in select spots while the steering wheel gets an Alcantara wrap. Like its Civic cousin, all Type S models get a six-speed manual with the shift knob being made out of dark anodized metal. A 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard with the software coming bundled with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Acura’s 10.2-inch Precision Cockpit system (aka digital instrument cluster) is also standard along with AcuraWatch and a 16-speaker ELS 3D sound system.

Potent Performance Lurks Under The Hood Of Type S

All 2024 Integra Type S models are powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 320-horsepower and is lifted from the Civic Type R. Acura claims that performance tweaks to its version of the 2.0-liter allow the engine to produce five more horsepower than its Honda badged counterpart. All of this power is channeled to the front wheels but tweaks to the suspension and a helical limited slip differential help keep torque steer firmly at bay.

Along with the extra power, Acura also gave the Type S beefier brakes to help bring the fun to a safe and stable stop. Acura claims that all of this is also highly customizable with buyers being able to alter select settings of the car via software in the infotainment system which allows them to tailor the car to their own distinct tastes. Acura didn’t release any pricing for the 2024 Integra Type S as of yet, but did confirm that the model will go on sale in June and will be assembled at the brand’s plant in Marysville, Ohio.

Value and Verdict

The $37,000 list price for the A-Spec Tech Package car I drove feels like a solid buy. It’s not the plushest or most technologically advanced-feeling thing on four wheels right now, but it strikes a uniquely perfect balance between luxury, practicality, and performance that driving enthusiasts will genuinely enjoy and commuters will appreciate.

I have a tendency to lean into extremes when it comes to my own cars—I set one car up for hard driving, another for chill summer days, and another for road trips … it’s rewarding and glorious but a huge pain in the ass. The Integra, on the other hand, makes a strong case for a single car that can do pretty much every kind of driving.

It’s also a really strong case for learning how to drive stick. Get a friend to teach you, watch some YouTube videos, do whatever it takes if you’re on the fence—the 2023 Integra is probably one of the last exceptional new-car manual-transmission experiences we’re going to have available on U.S. roads without spending supercar money. That’s always been the old Integra ethos, and it’s nothing short of marvelous that it still lives on today.

The ‘OG’ ITR

From a North American point of view, the last model year for the Integra was effectively in 2001. After being collaboratively introduced in 1985 by Honda and Acura, the car would live through three generations within that time frame, with the Integra Type R (DC2) – first introduced in Japan in 1995 – eventually becoming its halo model. Exclusively sold under the Acura flag west of the Atlantic, the Type R provided top-of-the-line performance within the Integra roster, and is most famous for its peppy, high-revving and naturally-aspirated 197 hp b18c5 engine. Significant improvements to the chassis also ensured that the front-wheel drive sport compact was just as beloved for its handling capabilities and raw nature.

1997 Acura Integra Type R (DC2)

While the Integra badge would persevere in the post-DC2-era through Honda, the 2001-2006 Honda Integra was produced solely for certain countries in the eastern hemisphere. For the North American markets, the car was ultimately replaced by the RSX while continuing to be branded as an Acura. While both the Integra and RSX shared basically the same underpinnings – and for the most part, the same appearances – it became a lot more difficult for those in the west to consider the Integra and RSX as contemporaries. Here, the RSX felt more like a successor or even a different model altogether, and not necessarily in a good way. The biggest reason for this? There were no Type R models produced for any markets outside of Japan.

Importing the right-hand-drive JDM Honda ITR is the only way to get one outside of Japan.

Today, the Acura Integra Type R has gained a cult-following and is wildly sought-after amongst grassroots motorsports circles, the tuner community and avid car collectors alike. While the original ITR will always occupy a special place in our hearts, we also hope that a modern iteration of the car will breathe new life into the brand and the return of its iconic sport compact model.

Driving the Acura Integra

The Integra experience is good from the second you sit down; the driver’s seat is comfortable, visibility is clear. Sharp sculpting on the hood gives you the sense that you’re in something meant to be driven with intention. Actually, let me back up; the experience is good as soon as you pick up the key. It’s a handsome little totem, a classy reminder of the car’s coolness.

The clutch didn’t feel too light or springy to me, and I was able to roll off into first gear very intuitively. In the car’s normal drive mode, its steering and suspension had a light but appreciable tautness. Moving down to comfort, I had an immediate sense of reduced effort and feeling in the wheel; controls were all essentially a little muted but so was the road’s harshness. Steering and throttle response were the clearest-changed in the sport setting—the car was suddenly much more eager to rev while the wheel had some earnest weight to it as the gauges went red.

In addition to changing the gauge cluster’s coloring (blue for comfort, white for normal, red for sport), the sound effect Acura uses as drive modes change is a unique little squink that sounds lifted from a sci-fi video game. It’s a great little touch that makes the experience of using this car just a squeak more fun. And finally, if none of the pre-packaged configurations are satisfying, an individual mode exists where you can pick your own combo of responsiveness settings.

Where I like to play (low gear, low speed, high revs), the Integra was having a ball. Exceptional LED headlights seared the mountainside roads I haunt, dancing between second and third gear, while the car felt really stable as I tussled its hair, linking turns. Intensely scanning for deer in my peripheral vision gave me plenty of occasions to test the brakes, too, which didn’t give me any inconsistency or noticeably deteriorated performance (in cold ambient, but still).

Like its forefathers, the new Integra’s peak power is high up its rev range. But you don’t need to flog this thing and run it on a roaring boil the way you did with the B- and K-Series Hondas we were tinkering with years ago. Granted, that intensity in the old engines is characterful and fun, so I can’t pretend its absence always feels like a plus. Acura claims peak torque is available from just 1,800 rpm and that feels about right—lean into the gas and you can feel its energy swelling even without a downshift. That said, you’ll spend a lot of drives in this thing looking for excuses to drop a gear to get the tachometer swinging.

Speaking of the tachometer, and the human-machine interface in general, I found the Integra’s surprisingly (and pleasantly) old-school. Yeah, the gauge cluster is all digital—but it depicts the main gauges like dials, just like I had in my ’96 Integra. You can display more info like a trip computer and tire pressures and whatnot, but you can also turn that noise off and run some refreshingly simple gauges. The head-up display can be set to show speed and nav info from a smartphone. I declined to use this; I hate HUDs and prefer the bare minimum amount of information in my face while driving. But if you’re the opposite, the HUD is plenty legible and adjustable.

The climate controls and volume are all on their old knobs—no need to fumble through some dumb interface to crank the music or temperature in a heartbeat. And speaking of beats, once again, Acura’s ELS system is magnificent, and, yes, digitally compressed music files delivered via Spotify still bang.

The Civic Si is that fun, tossable Civic with extra “Sport Injection” and the Acura Integra is it’s slightly more expensive brother, a Civic Si with an automatic in a suit, more at home on the Pacific Coast Highway than the twists and turns of a curvy mountain road.

The Integra shares a lot of similarities with the Honda Civic upon which it is built, which is fantastic. The compact Acura features the same engine as the Civic Si, together with smart dampers, available adaptive suspension, a somewhat stiffer body structure, and a practical hatchback cargo compartment.

It provides the greatest features of Honda’s compact sedan along with a bit extra flare. We noted the more natural engine sound, precise manual transmission, and a pleasurable around-town driving experience unsurpassed by the Acura’s rivals on our first drive.

Nevertheless, the tires loudly protest long before the chassis would buckle; this platform is capable of much more grip.

Today, Acura has clearly committed to homogeny across its lineup. The brand’s signature bunker-window headlights and proud pentagonal grille dominate the Integra’s presentation, but it’s a clean and contemporary design on the whole. Its liftback body style puts it kind of between a small sedan and a hatchback in size and silhouette.

The Integra’s platform and 1.5-liter, 200-horsepower VTEC turbo engine are shared with the new-for-’22 Civic Si. The engine’s responsive and reasonably lively. It feels like the design of the underpinnings might be what really makes the car simply feel good underneath and around you, though. The ride is confident and predictable as you transition from casual cruising to backroad revving and back down again. Most critically, it’s comfortable without being too dull.

Meanwhile, the coolest value proposition here is the availability of a manual transmission in a sport luxury car. All other comparable brands have stopped making stick-shift—I guess the majority of the car-buying population doesn’t seem to want it. But they’re missing out. Should you get an Integra just because it’s the only entry-level sport luxury car with a six-speed manual? Absolutely. Shifting yourself almost always makes a meh car decent; this is a competent car with a great shifter.

Oh, and let’s not forget that they also unveiled the new limited-production Acura NSX Type S.

This is the closest “look” we currently have of the new Acura Integra.

What has been confirmed is that production will begin in 2022, and all media – albeit provided in teaser form – indicates that the new Integra will once again take the form of a 2-door sport compact coupe/hatchback. “The Integra is back,” Jon Ikeda, VP of Acura, said in a statement. “I’m thrilled to say the Integra is returning to the Acura lineup with the same fun-to-drive spirit and DNA of the original, fulfilling our commitment to Precision Crafted Performance in every way—design, performance and the overall driving experience.”

Reintroducing another Type R variant for the new Integra needs to be both the bare minimum and standard bearer, if the brand truly hopes to generate sufficient fanfare and interest; particularly from sports car enthusiasts and the performance-loving community, which will serve as the catalysts in doing so. At this conjecture, giving the green-light on a new Integra Type R feels as natural as it does necessary, with Honda already having a treasure trove of a parts bin to loot from; sharing some DNA with the impressive Honda Civic Type R seems logical, and could only produce positive results.

Proof of this sentiment is already circulating on social media, with this rendering of the new Acura Integra Type R provoking plenty of emotion.

The above rendering (first seen on Instagram) pays some proper homage to the original Integra Type R – a car which would go on to help define the hugely popular sport compact and import car genres in the late ’90s. More on that iconic car, below.

Honda Civic

Acura Integra Features, Options, and Competition

The four-door BMW 228i Gran Coupe, Audi A3, and Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 are the closest competitors to this as far as new cars go. I think the Benz is the pick if you’re all about futuristic interiors, the Audi has the best fuel economy stats, and the Bimmer looks the coolest to me. But of that lot, the Acura’s six-speed manual would win my money.

Base-model Integras start at $31,895, but the six-speed is only available on Acura’s A-Spec Technology Package trim—the top of its range right now. This car doesn’t really have optional features, just three trim levels (base, A-Spec, and A-Spec Technology) with different loadouts.

All Integras run the same 1.5-liter VTEC turbo engine at this point. The base car has LED headlights, sunroof, blindspot monitoring, 17-inch wheels, and a CVT. The A-Spec, $2,000 more, adds 18-inch wheels, a black spoiler, LED fog lights, and more minor decorative accessories. That version is CVT-only as well. The A-Spec Technology, $3,000 on top of the A-Spec, has the coolest pieces of kit, though. The adaptive damper system that lets you change ride feel with a switch, the ELS sound system, super nice microsuede front seats, and nine-inch touchscreen display are all very much worth paying for if you can swing it. And of course, the six-speed transmission becomes an option once you step up to A-Spec Tech.
