It has been a while since anyone has spotted the upcoming Volkswagen Passat station wagon on the road. However, a spy photographer managed to capture it in the northern region, still disguised with camouflage stickers. Despite the disguise, the prototype appears to have a more aggressive appearance, possibly due to its dark-tinted windows and black trim which contrast well against its white body in the snowy surroundings.
According to insider sources, the new Passat model will be longer, wider, and have a stretched wheelbase, giving it a more sleek and sporty appearance with attractive proportions. The exact dimensions are yet to be confirmed.
Could this prototype’s menacing appearance change once the fake grille and fascia stickers are removed? The current Passat’s horizontally mounted driving lamps will not be present on the next-generation model, which will instead feature a thin grille similar to the VW Golf.
The headlights will also not be wholly connected by a grille, as depicted here. Once the black tape is peeled away, a large lower grille with upward-curled corners should be visible, giving the car a more cheerful look.
The new Passat is expected to offer gasoline and diesel engine options, but it may be the last Passat to do so as Volkswagen is heavily pushing towards electrification.
Spy photos have already shown the next-gen wagon being tested with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, which may pair a 1.5-liter engine with an electric motor and a large battery, providing a potential electric-only range of 62 miles. However, this has not been confirmed.
What has been confirmed is that the Passat wagon, also known as the Passat Variant in some markets, will be the only variant of the Passat in the future. The sedan will no longer be available, leaving only the wagon to carry on the Passat legacy. The Passat will no longer be offered in North America.
Redesign

2024 VW Passat Wagon
The ninth-generation Volkswagen Passat will make its world debut this fall with a simplified lineup, as the mid-size family car will be sold exclusively as a station wagon. Width is now 20 mm (0.7 in) wider to 1852 mm (72.9 in) and height 7 mm (0.2 in) taller to 1482 mm (58.3 in).
Due to its larger dimensions, the next-generation model provides 50 mm (1.9 inches) more legroom. Cargo capacity increased by 40 liters (1.4 cubic feet) to 690 liters (24.3 cu ft) with the rear seats positioned. Volume increased by 140 liters (4.9 cu ft) compared to the previous Passat’s carriage to 1,920 liters (67.8 cu ft) when the rear seats were folded down. For the sake of clarity, the cargo volume is determined by loading objects to the height of the rear seat backs.
What we said about the 2024 Tiguan a month ago when the crossover was teased also applies to the 2024 Passat. Both have a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch tablet-like infotainment system. The latter can be upgraded to a 15-inch LCD for an additional fee. A head-up display that projects information directly onto the windshield will also be offered as an optional extra.
VW plans to install a choice of petrol, mild hybrid petrol, diesel, and a plug-in hybrid powertrain under the hood. The PHEVs will have a combined capacity of 201 to 268 horsepower (150 to 200 kilowatts) and an electric range of up to 75 miles (120 kilometers). The only information provided regarding the battery is that it supports DC charging.
Volkswagen plans to sell the new Passat Variant with the DCC Pro, which is an evolution of the automaker’s adaptive chassis technology. Thanks to the faster two-valve shock absorbers, optimal damping is calculated and adjusted for each tire in a fraction of a second. This reduces road vibration and improves road comfort.
The 2024 Passat will offer high-beam matrix LED headlamps capable of illuminating the road up to 500 meters (1,640 feet) ahead. In the case of the Tiguan, it received the more advanced HD matrix headlight technology like the facelifted Touareg. At the rear of the upcoming carriage, the taillights will be linked by an LED beam, in keeping with the latest automotive design trends.

Ходовая часть
В связи с адаптацией силовых агрегатов к стандарту экономичности WLTP, изменения коснутся как дизельных, так и бензиновых моторов. Они будут работать либо с «механикой», либо с DSG-роботами.
Нельзя не упомянуть об особенностях гибридных версий 9-го Пассата. Автомобиль типа GTE будет иметь несколько режимов движения:
- E-MODE;
- GTE;
- Hybrid.
Режим Hybrid обеспечит автоматическое переключение между бензиновым и электрическим моторами. Новая модель линейки «Пассат» разжилась:
- адаптивным шасси DCC;
- электромеханическим усилителем тормозов.
Конструктивные изменения ходовой части непременно скажутся на комфортности езды. В зависимости от качества дорожного покрытия, водитель сможет выбрать 1 из 15 вариантов жесткости амортизаторов.
Базовое оборудование
Автомобиль ждет расширенная базовая комплектация. Предполагается, что Passat B9 будет оснащен:
- 3-спицевым мультирулем;
- подогревом сидений и наружных зеркал;
- 6 подушками безопасности;
- кондиционером;
- галогеновым светом;
- системами esp и abs;
- электромеханическим усилителем руля;
- аудиосистемой с ЖК-дисплеем.
В базовой сборке цветов кузова будет несколько. В этот раз молдинги и бампер приобретут те же оттенки, что и «железо».

2024 VW Passat Review
The 2024 VW Passat has entered the prototype phase with the next-generation model having returned to the Nurburgring for additional high-speed testing. The new Passat will only be available as a station wagon. The ID.7 has replaced the Passat sedan, and the B9 iteration of the D-segment model will be distributed exclusively in Europe as a long-roof model.
As a reminder, the Passat was discontinued in the United States after the 2022 model year, and there is no indication a replacement will be introduced in the United States.
Volkswagen delegated most of the new model development work to Skoda, which is not surprising given the close ties between the German and Czech models. The Passat and Superb will be produced at the Volkswagen Group’s facilities in Bratislava (Slovakia), while the electric vehicles will be produced in Emden (Germany) and Kvasiny (Czech Republic). The Superb will continue to be offered in liftback and wagon configurations.
The death of the Passat sedan on the market is not surprising. The European D-segment continues to lose market share as more people choose SUVs. The once popular D-segment cars Ford Mondeo and Opel Insignia are no longer available as the segment continues to contract.
Regarding the new Passat B9, it will be an evolution of the current vehicle running on the MQB platform. It will be equipped with new, more efficient petrol and diesel engines designed to meet the forthcoming Euro 7 emission standards. The presence of a plug-in hybrid drivetrain has not been confirmed, but it’s probably safe to assume that one will be available.
The next-generation Volkswagen Passat is undergoing high-speed evaluations at the Nurburgring, with different trial vehicles being tested for final adjustments before its launch. As previously announced, the new Passat will be sold exclusively as a station wagon, with the ID.7 replacing the sedan version.
The B9 generation of the D-segment model will only be distributed in Europe in a long-roof version. Unfortunately, the Passat has been discontinued in the United States, and its successor is not expected to arrive in the country. Skoda was primarily responsible for the development of the new model, which is not surprising given the close relationship between the Passat and its Czech cousin, the Superb.
Both vehicles will be produced at Volkswagen Group’s Bratislava plant in Slovakia, while electric vehicle production will take place in Emden, Germany, and Kvasiny, Czech Republic. The Superb will continue to be available in both liftback and wagon forms.
It’s not surprising that the Passat sedan is no longer available on the market, as Europe’s D-segment has been losing customers due to the rising popularity of SUVs. Other once-popular D-segment cars such as the Ford Mondeo and Opel Insignia have also disappeared from the market as the segment continues to shrink.
The upcoming Passat B9 will be an evolution of the current car, built on the MQB platform, with new and more efficient gasoline and diesel engines designed to meet the Euro 7 emissions standards. While plug-in hybrid powertrains have not been officially confirmed, they are likely to be part of the range.
Deliveries of the new Passat are set to begin in September of this year, indicating that an official debut is likely to happen in the coming months.
2024 Volkswagen Passat Engine
The engine of the 2024 VW Passat will be a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that will generate 174 horsepower and 206 pound-feet of torque. The engine will be paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that will provide smooth shifting and effortless acceleration.
