The latest Mercedes-AMG GLS comes with an even more extensive range of standard equipment compared to its predecessor. The car also has a Burmester surround sound system, Blind Spot Assist, and a 360-degree Surround View system.

The ISG is a powerful electric motor that combines a starter and alternator, performing hybrid functions such as boosting, recuperation, load point shifting, gliding, and restarting the engine with the start/stop function.

The car also features equipment such as the MBUX Augmented Video function, MULTIBEAM LED headlamps, Driver Assistance Package Plus, AIR BALANCE package, multicontour front seats, head-up display, MBUX Interior Assistant, and heated and cooled front cup holders as standard.

Active roll stabilization with new configuration:

The Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 has an AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension with adaptive adjustable damping as standard. It also features the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL active roll stabilization system with two electro-mechanical actuators at the front and rear axle. The system improves body roll when cornering and enhances tuning of load change behavior and precision when cornering. It also provides increased driving comfort on straight roads by balancing out one-sided road imperfections.

The roll stabilization and air suspension in the GLS 63 have received a software update and a new setup as part of the facelift. This increases the range between dynamic handling and comfort. As we already mentioned, we don’t expect to see any changes under the hood, so the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLS should continue with familiar engine options. So, base models will continue with a 3.0-liter inline-six, which puts out around 362 horsepower. This engine has enough power to satisfy most drivers and even offers pretty decent fuel economy. You may count on about 20 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. The GLS 580 has been discontinued recently, so the next one on the offer is the AMG-badged version.

Of course, we are talking about the AMG GLS 63, which comes equipped with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, which puts out around 600 horsepower. There is also a Maybach version called GLS 600, which uses the same engine but has a max power of 550 horses.

Another new addition to the GLS is the Silver Shadow finish of the center and side climate control vents, a detail taken from the Mercedes-Maybach GLS.

The Mercedes-Benz GLS has undergone a facelift with an upgraded MBUX infotainment system. The latest generation MBUX infotainment system boasts a new look for the displays, which can be operated directly and conveniently as a touchscreen. The driver display is customizable with three different display styles and modes, providing all relevant information to the driver in the Classic style, dynamic design for the central tachometer in the Sporty style, and only essential information in the Discreet style. In addition, both displays can be shown in seven color schemes in conjunction with ambient lighting, creating an impressive color experience in the interior.

In addition to its visual enhancements, the GLS also boasts functional off-road features, making it a versatile and capable SUV. The Off-Road Mode turns special content such as gradient, lateral inclination, compass, and steering angle into a visual experience. With the standard Surround View system with 360-degree camera, the “transparent hood” function shows a virtual view under the front of the vehicle when the Off-Road mode is active. This enables the driver to identify obstacles such as large rocks or deep potholes sooner and more easily.

The GLS 580 4MATIC has an Off-Road Engineering Package that includes an underride guard, providing an additional 1.2 inches of ground clearance in combination with the SUV’s standard AIRMATIC suspension. What’s changed about the GLS’s engine range?

Every engine in the GLS range now features 48-volt mild hybrid assistance. Mercedes hasn’t yet explained how much of a difference the change has made to the SUV’s fuel economy, but the brand has reported that the mild hybrid system adds up to 21bhp of boost under maximum throttle.

The standard GLS is available with four engines – two petrols and two diesels. The entry-level GLS 450 has a 3.0-litre straight six petrol unti with 375bhp and 369lb/ft of torque. Mercedes says it can return between 24.1 and 27.6mpg, while its CO2 emissions stand between 233 and 266g/km.

Above that, there’s the GLS 580. This model gets a 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine with 510bhp and 538lb/ft of torque. Mercedes claims it has enough grunt to shove the SUV from 0–62 mph in 4.9 seconds – but you pay a price in fuel economy. At best, you’ll manage around 21mpg.

The GLS’s diesel range is built around a 3.0-litre straight unit, available in two states of tune. The cheapest 350d produces 308bhp and 479lb/ft of torque, while the more expensive 450d has 362bhp and 553lb/ft of torque. Both units can return up to 35.3mpg, which is roughly a 3mpg improvement over the 3.0-litre straight-six diesel fitted to the pre-facelift GLS 400d.

Every GLS engine is mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox four-wheel drive as standard. And, while Mercedes is well-aware that GLS buyers are unlikely to ever take their cars off-road, it also offers an ‘off-road engineering package’ as an optional extra, which adds some underbody protection panels and a 30mm increase in ride height.

And the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63?

Obviously, that’s been upgraded too. Again, you get a redesigned front bumper, a new radiator grille, two extra paint finishes and a pair of new upholstery options. However, the AMG model also receives its own LED rear light signature to set it apart from the standard GLS range.

In addition to the styling changes, Mercedes has increased the amount of standard equipment fitted to the AMG GLS 63. Now, every model features a sliding panoramic sunroof, heated and cooled front seats, a Burmester audio system, keyless go, a 360-degree parking camera and a noisy AMG performance exhaust system.

Buyers also get adaptive dampers and Mercedes-AMG’s active roll stabilisation system as standard. The system uses a set of electromechanical actuators on both axles, which prop up suspension when cornering hard. AMG says the technology improves the SUV’s cornering performance and benefits comfort by compensating for uneven road surfaces.

The AMG GLS 63 is the most powerful model in the SUV’s range. Its 4.0-litre V8 churns out 603bhp and 627lb/ft of torque, which Mercedes says is enough for a 0–62mph time of 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 173mph. Despite the huge performance, it’s somehow more efficient than the less potent Maybach model under WLTP testing, with a claimed best-case figure of 22.8mpg.
