Does Jeep think it’ll work?

Globally, Jeep has enjoyed a four-fold sales increase since the start of the decade – up from 400,000 cars a year then to 1.2-1.5 million now.

The success of the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee hybrids in the US shows Jeep that buyers are happy with electrification – and Jeep is so confident that it’s bring the Grand Cherokee to the UK next year, after delays caused by supply chain issues. A spokesperson for the brand said: ‘It’s a big opportunity. A 4xe Jeep is a better Jeep.’

Jeep’s new-look line-up will also include a Range Rover Sport rival based on the recently revealed Wagoneer S concept, as well as a rugged Wrangler-style EV called the Recon. The fourth electric Jeep has not yet been revealed.

Stellantis.

What was the thinking behind the design?

Jeep CEO Christian Meunier says the Avenger is true to the company’s core pillars of freedom, adventure, authenticity and passion. ‘It’s not marketing bullshit. Whenever we have a conversation about product, it has to be robust, and we like to convey that with the design of the product. There’s no fake stuff on a Jeep.’

Meunier also acknowledges that Jeep is under-performing in much of Europe. Italy is its biggest market by some way, with 10 per cent SUV market share, compared to one or two per cent in most other countries.

‘It’s disappointing. Why are we so low? There have been issues with offering the wrong powertrains . With the Renegade 4xe we are starting to get momentum. The vehicles are getting more appropriate for Europe, for daily use and a lifestyle machine for the weekend.’ He predicts it will be Jeep’s best seller in Europe by 2024.

Jeep has certainly paid more than a passing tribute to its heritage with the car. Its shoulder line is from the firm’s cornerstone product, the Willy’s Jeep of 1941, as are the trapezoidal wheel arches. The floating C-pillar is from the Compass and Grand Cherokee. The grille has the family’s seven-slot look but is in fact closed on the electric models (with cooling air coming in under the front bumper).

Inside, there’s a strong horizontal line across the dashboard and plenty of oddment stowage, including a simply massive storage bin in the centre console.

In the middle of the dash is a 10.25-inch infotainment screen and, in front of the driver, digital gauge cluster of 7.0 or 10.25 inches, depending on spec. The touchscreen supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, which is good because Jeep’s built-in sat-nav system costs extra.

There’s a choice of seven body colours, and a variety of dealer-fit body graphics for the roof, bonnet and grille. Wheel sizes range from 16 to 18 inches.

Tell me more about the baby Jeep

The Avenger was designed to be a pure-electric SUV that could get more young people – especially females – to embrace a brand traditionally associated with macho outdoor types. It was also the company’s the first-ever electric vehicle. It’ll be followed by plenty more: Jeep will have four electric cars on sale in Europe by 2025 and will be all-electric in Europe by 2030.

It shares some underpinnings with Stellantis stablemates such as the Peugeot 2008, but the e-CMP2 platform has been heavily modified, and the bodywork and cabin are entirely new. An Alfa Romeo spin-off is expected to follow, built at the same factory in Tychy, Poland, where the Fiat 500 is also produced, along with the Abarth 500 and Lancia Ypsilon.

Jeep’s Head of Global Design Ralph Gilles said: ‘When I first started here, 31 years ago, we only had three name plates. A niche brand, not thinking in a global way. At Stellantis, the pace of change is incredible. Jeep still has a small-town dynamic, with this incredible company behind us.’

His brief from Meunier? ‘I want a fun, boxy Jeep that’s all electric.’ In turn, Gilles briefed Daniele Calonaci, European design chief: ‘Even without a badge, you need to know it’s a Jeep.’

The Avenger was designed in Italy, making the first Jeep to be designed outside the US (although studios from around the world have had design input in the past). And it doesn’t just look like a Jeep – even the EV has the brand’s traditional off-road ability too, despite being front-wheel drive.

It comes with hill descent control and six driving modes: Eco, Normal, Sport, Sand, Mud and Snow. The ground clearance is 200mm or more, depending on spec, with a 20-degree breakover angle, 20-degree approach angle and a 32-degree departure angle. Most Avengers won’t ever see the dirt, but that capability and ruggedness will make them well suited to battling kerbs, speed bumps and tricky multi-storey ramps.

Interior

As an adventure-ready crossover EV, Jeep made sure to provide the Avenger plenty of usable interior space. The design itself is described as robust and functional, and it has plenty of storage spaces as well.

For instance, the center console of the vehicle can swallow up to 34 liters of stuff. The trunk meanwhile has a cargo capacity of 380 liters. Access to the trunk is also made easy thanks to a power liftgate, while an adjustable floor allows for flexibility in loading bulkier items.

Inside the Jeep Avenger

The Avenger can also provide comfortable seating for up to five occupants. The seats themselves are wrapped in a combination of leather and vinyl, with those at the front featuring electronic adjustment.

Drivers of the new Jeep EV also get an auto-dimming rearview mirror, as well as heated and power-folding side mirrors.

2023 Jeep Avenger styling, interior and technology

The Jeep Avenger is intentionally sleeker and sportier than the more boxy Jeep Renegade. Bosses say they want to draw a younger and more feminine customer, who may not like the more traditional 4×4-like appearance of the Renegade. It is going up against really sleek rivals such as the latest Vauxhall Mokka-e so Jeep’s approach is valid.

“The all-new Avenger will offer Jeep brand capability that is rightsized for the European market,” said Antonella Bruno, head of Jeep Europe at Stellantis. “This modern, fun and emotional SUV will appeal to a growing set of customers who are looking for a capable, compact, modern and all-electric Jeep brand alternative to the current players.”

Aspects that stand out include the radical bulging front and rear wings, the curvaceous bonnet and the mean and moody LED headlights. The Jeep Avenger EV has a closed-off version of the brand’s seven-bar grille, to improve aerodynamics. A contrast roof colour will be available and we like the stubby LED tail lamps.

The interior of the new Jeep Avenger has yet to be revealed. The firm is keeping that under its hat for now, ahead of the car’s reveal in Paris on 17 October. The fun interior of the Renegade shows it knows how to add a bit of adventure to its small SUVs, and we can expect a big improvement in quality and finish. An array of colourful infotainment screens are also certain to feature.

The new Jeep Avenger will have “plenty of space for people and cargo,” we’re told. The packaging efficiencies of a platform optimised for electrification should open up a good amount of room in the cabin, and its focus on young families means the boot will be a practical size.

Summary

The Jeep Avenger is a compact five-door SUV and the first all-electric model to join the Jeep range. It hit UK roads in Summer 2023.

The smallest option in Jeep’s line-up, this new electric SUV shares its foundations with the Peugeot e-2008 and Vauxhall Mokka Electric. However, the Avenger is more compact – at just over four metres long, the SUV is around the same length as a Volkswagen Polo.

Designed with the European market in mind, the Avenger has received a very warm welcome from the media, achieving review scores from good to outstanding. It was also awarded ‘European Car of the Year’ for 2023.

“Never before has Jeep had such a competitive and on-trend product to sell in Europe”, says Autocar‘s Mark Tisshaw, who adds that the car’s boxy design makes for a surprisingly practical interior, and that it is capable at handling difficult terrain even without the four-wheel drive setups that Jeep drivers are accustomed to.

The Electrifying.com team are more impressed with how the Avenger handles the average urban commute. They conclude that the SUV is comfortable, has fun styling, and that “it’s great for around-town manoeuvring and better than most other compact SUVs that are noticeably bigger”.

The Avenger offers a battery range that keeps up with its competitors too, but some of these rivals offer a few miles extra from full charge, and for a cheaper price too.

Jeep announced in late 2023 that the Avenger range also now includes traditional petrol and petrol mild-hybrid models, and is also planning to release a 4×4 off-road version sometime this year.

As of February 2024, the Jeep Avenger holds a New Car Expert Rating of A with a score of 71%.

Jeep Avenger: Durable Interior But Small

There are three trim levels at launch — Longitude, Altitude and Summit. All cars get a 10.25in infotainment screen supporting Apple Car Play and Android Auto plus some form of cruise control. Altitude makes the latter Adaptive, while Summit adds traffic jam stop and go plus lane centering, which isn’t quite self-driving but will take some of the onus off the driver to keep on track.

The front cabin is comfortable and feels rugged.

Jeep

The front seats are comfortable, although none of the trims have electric adjustment as standard. This is a pricey optional extra even on the Summit car I drove. The cabin is built to be durable, with liberal use of tough high-quality plastic and seat material that is clearly intended to be wiped clean easily.

The controls are very traditional, with stalks for lights and wipers. The 10.25in infotainment screen sits on top of the dashboard in a way that makes you think it was an afterthought, although Jeep claims this is to make it equally accessible to the front passenger. The climate controls are mostly operated by robust discrete buttons, which will be welcome if you need to use them when wearing gloves. Jeep has also included a lot of storage space in the front cabin. The company claims all the cubbies and door pockets amount to a total of 34 liters of space, more than twice what is typical for most cars.

There’s plenty of headroom in the rear but not so much knee room.

Jeep

Although there is plenty of headroom in the back, the knee room isn’t so great. If you’re six foot and sitting behind someone in the front who is equally tall, you will be a bit cramped. There is a single USB-C port for rear passengers, but no air conditioning vents or controls.

The rear luggage space is also more hatchback than SUV, and less than many electric compact cars. The base space is 355 liters, and this only extends to 1,053 liters with the rear seats down. Putting that in perspective, the Peugeot e-208 has more with its rear seats down, and the Volkswagen ID. 3 a lot more with or without. The front-wheel drive Avenger can’t tow, either. It has no rating and no option for a hook. This is a bit of a surprise for a vehicle you may want to use to haul a trailer of camping gear or a small boat.

The Avenger has less rear luggage space than some compact hatchbacks.

Jeep

On the plus side, from the Altitude trim upwards there is a kick-release on the tailgate, and in my experience, it works very well. If you approach the car with your hands full of shopping bags, you’ll be able to get them in the back with ease. The boot lip is also made of the same durable plastic as the trim, so will withstand items that scrape as you load them, such as bikes. To go with this, there’s a washable mat available so you can put something dirty in the rear without spoiling your carpets.

Tell me more about the EV’s specifications

It features a single electric motor, with an output of 154bhp and 192lb ft of torque, powering the front wheels. The battery measure 51kWh and is divided into two cell banks that sit under the front and rear seats, to allow some extra room for the rear passengers’ feet.

Jeep says that, under WLTP conditions, the Avenger has a maximum range of 248 miles on mixed roads or 342 miles if you’re just dithering around town. It also offers support for 100kW DC rapid charging which can charge the battery from 20 to 80 percent in 24 minutes.

It measures 4084mm long and, with its short front and rear overhangs, the Avenger is the smallest Jeep, slotting into the range under the Renegade. Its boot space is 380 litres and it weighs 1541kg, of which 340kg is the electric powertrain.

Exterior

While breaking the standard Jeep mold by getting an EV powertrain, the new Avenger still retains the modern design approach typical to the brand.

Up front on this new crossover is Jeep’s iconic seven-slot grille. However, this now assumes a new horizontally-oriented design. Flanking this piece is a pair of sharp-looking LED daytime running lights (DRL). Below the DRLs are the headlamp clusters.

It bears unmistakable Jeep styling

As a side note, the Avenger also gets a good deal of protection from damage caused by low-speed impacts. For starters, its headlamps are actually encased, and it gets real skid plates as well. Jeep also implied that the plastic cladding around the vehicle is thick enough to stave off damage to the body.

From the side of the new Avenger, one can see bulging fenders. The said fenders top off the signature Jeep trapezoidal-shaped wheel arches which were designed to allow for better wheel travel and maximum articulation. It is also from this angle where one can see the new model’s silhouette which was optimized for aerodynamics.

The beefy lines and angles continue towards the rear

The rear of the Avenger then gets a pair of LED taillights with a design reminiscent of the classic X-marking on old jerrycans.

Completing the look of the Avenger EV is a set of 18-inch wheels.

Jeep Avenger: At Home On Tarmac But Some Off Road Ability

With just 156hp and 260Nm of torque, the Avenger was never going to win any EV performance records. On paper, its 0-62mph sprint time of 9.6 seconds and 93mph top speed are pedestrian. However, I found that it was dynamically better than these numbers would imply. The Eco mode is languid, but Normal is usable and Sport mode feels quite spritely. In this setting I found I could execute impromptu A-road overtakes successfully when I caught slow traffic. It’s no hot hatch like the MG4 XPOWER, but as a nippy little family car it fits the bill adequately. Although the weight is low thanks to the battery position, there is noticeable roll in corners due to the height of the vehicle, but I never felt threatened by understeer in corners. The weight of 1,615kg is high compared to an ICE equivalent but not significantly so for an EV in this class. The Avenger also feels planted at highway speeds.

As it is front-wheel-drive, the Avenger shouldn’t have the same off-road abilities as a full-fat Jeep. But alongside the Eco, Normal and Sport drive modes are Mud, Snow and Sand options. There are also hill descent and hill hold systems. Normally, you’d only find these on four-wheel-drive cars. However, Jeep stressed that these weren’t just for show. The Avenger was demonstrated using its Snow mode to traverse high alternating bumps that lifted at least one wheel entirely off the ground, yet Snow mode was able to send power to the drive wheel that had traction to keep things moving forward.

The Jeep Avenger’s Snow mode works well despite only being two-wheel-drive.

James Morris

To help this, the car can cope with a 20-degree approach angle, a 32-degree departure angle, and a 20-degree breakover angle. It has a 200mm clearance and 230mm wading depth. So this may not be a 4×4, but you can take it off the beaten track with some confidence. However, all these abilities will also do well in urban environments, such as tight multistorey car parks and terrible city streets. The ride quality is relatively soft (albeit firmer than your average family hatchback), so potholes and speed bumps aren’t too troublesome.

Isn’t there a plug-in hybrid Avenger coming, too?

There certainly is. Jeep is gearing up to launch a 4xe plug-in hybrid version of the Avenger in June 2024. Like its Renegade and Compass 4xe siblings, it’ll have a petrol engine powering the front wheels and electric motor driving the rears. That means the Avenger 4xe will have four-wheel drive – and that should make it the most capable version of the SUV in the rough stuff.

However, Jeep still hasn’t confirmed the size and shape of the Avenger 4xe’s petrol engine. The Compass and Renegade 4xe use a Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre (also shared with the Alfa Tonale plug-in hybrid), but the CMP platform isn’t compatible with that unit. As such, it’s likely to use PSA’s stalwart 1.2-litre PureTech petrol. Despite the 4×4 credentials, Jeep will also emphasise the Avenger 4xe’s environmental credentials, with an estimated 30 miles of pure electric range.

Jeep teased the 4xe with the Avenger 4×4 Concept at the 2022 Paris Motor Show (above). The company’s CEO, Christian Meunier said: ‘We couldn’t help but wonder, what would happen if we injected the Jeep brand’s four-wheel-drive electrified capabilities into a compact package, while retaining the brand’s unique design language, capability and personality?’

Jeep only showed the tough visuals, keeping the finer details of the 4xe powertrain under wraps. The 4×4 concept featured chunkier tyres, prominent tow hooks, extra lights and thicker body cladding. It also previewed a new roof rack system, with belts designed to compress luggage.

The 4×4 concept’s approach angle means it can cope with a 21-degree ramp and depart a 34-degree obstacle without snagging the overhangs. That’s an improvement on the regular Avenger’s capability, as well as taking ground clearance above 200mm.

Jeep says the 4xe will delivers the brand’s trademark off-road prowess – and insiders say that even if the front wheels have zero grip on a 20-degree incline, the electric-powered rear axle will be able to comfortably accelerate up the car up and out of trouble.

Tech & Safety

The Avenger also manages to balance a no-nonsense interior design with high-tech features. For instance, it comes kitted out with a 10.25-inch central touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It even has a wireless smartphone charging pad.

Its power trunk is kick-activated

Its safety kit is no slouch as well. This is thanks to the presence of a Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), which enables the vehicle to keep itself in the center of the lane autonomously.

Other tech features present on the Avenger EV include a blind-spot monitoring system, automatic high beams, a 360-degree view camera, parking sensors, driver attention alert, traffic sign recognition, autonomous emergency braking, active park assist, and hill-descent control.

Jeep Avenger: Mediocre Range And Premium Price

However, one limit on how far you might want to take the Jeep Avenger off the beaten track is the range. The WLTP rating is 249 miles, and you need to be running in the weedy Eco mode to achieve that. In the mix of modes and road types I drove during my testing, my economy varied between 3 and 4 miles per kWh. That’s decent, but with a 51kWh usable battery you’ll be hard pressed to get much more than 200 miles of real-world driving out of this car unless you make liberal use of the disappointing Eco mode.

The Avenger will mostly be used on tarmac, but it still has some off-road ability.

Jeep

That’s enough for the occasional long-distance jaunt, and the 100kW DC charging means it only takes 24 minutes to replenish to 80% from 20%. There’s also 11kW AC charging, which takes 5.5 hours to go from zero to full (or around 8 hours on a 7kW AC wall box). In other words, this is an urban and commuting car mostly, which you can take for longer journeys on the odd weekend, rather than a vehicle you will want to do extensive distances in regularly.

That’s a bit of a drawback for a rugged off-roader. The small rear passenger space and luggage capacity also bias the Avenger more towards city small family usage than trekking across the wilderness with your adult friends. Its sweet spot would be for someone who lives in a town with nearby woods or beaches, who generally wants to hit the supermarket, park at the gym and take the kids to school, but also take a few bikes to the forest or out onto the sand. With prices ranging from £35,700 ($44,300) for the base Longitude trim up to £39,600 ($49,100) for the Summit, it’s not cheap, and the MG4 is more reasonable, with better range, if you just want a small family EV. But if you do fancy a little outdoor capability, there’s enough Jeep in the Avenger to make it worth considering.

What about the pure petrol model?

The pure-petrol Avenger features the same 99bhp 1.2-litre petrol engine as the mild hybrid model, minus the automatic gearbox and electrical gubbins. In its place – driving enthusiasts rejoice – is a six-speed manual transmission. You don’t sacrifice too much fuel economy by ditching the hybrid system, either. Jeep claims the petrol Avenger can return up to 42mpg.

The first cars will hit UK roads before the end of 2023, but they’ll only be available in limited numbers – at least initially. Jeep says it’ll bring just 500 cars to the UK this year, although it could expand on those numbers in 2024 if the uptake is strong enough.

Because it’s a small volume project, Jeep will sell petrol Avenger in one highly specified trim level. It’s called Altitude Plus and it comes as standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, adaptive LED headlights, a reversing camera, sat-nav, blind spot monitoring assist, heated seats and a positively bangin’ eight-speaker JBL audio system. Prices are expected to start from around £27,500.

Can I get a small EV with a 350 mile range?

I live in a townhouse with no off-street parking. I have a garage in a block but it is unpowered. As I would like to buy an EV, I monitored my driving patterns over the last few months to work out the range I need. Based on that I have concluded that I need a minimum range of 350 miles.

This is because:

A) It would allow me to charge once around every two weeks when not travelling (there is only one high power public charger near and the nearest supercharger is 40 minutes away)
B) Allow me to do my regular 200-mile motorway journey, at 70mph, with a single charge in the middle of the journey that will allow me sufficient charge for the next day irrespective of time of year.

I could by a Tesla Model 3 long-range, but to be honest its far too big and doesn’t fit my garage. I have looked at the ID.3, but I don’t want an SUV.

My ideal EV would be the size of a three-door MINI as this suits my work/life needs, being great in town and on the motorway and fits in the garage. When will there be EVs with this range in this size?

A long-range EV needs a huge battery pack that simply won’t fit into a small MINI-sized hatchback. That’s why all the smaller EVs have limited ranges (which will be sufficient for the city use most people buy them for).

To find an electric car that’ll suit your needs, you might need to wait for the introduction of solid-state batteries in electric cars. These are more energy-dense than lithium-ion batteries, so a more compact battery will be able to provide more range. They’re considerably more expensive than current lithium-ion batteries, though, so we probably won’t see them rolled out across EVs for a number of years yet.

Jeep Avenger: Jeep On The Outside

Even though it’s small and urban-oriented, the Avenger still looks like a Jeep. The classic slot grille at the front remains, although this is no longer an air intake. Instead, it’s now a design motif with a curve to aid aerodynamics. There’s the characteristic “gas can” look to the taillights, even if this is a tad paradoxical for an EV. You even get Jeep easter egg patterns hidden around the car.

Is the Jeep Avenger only suited for road use?

Jeep

The Avenger is based on Stellantis’s E-CMP2 platform, an evolution of the E-CMP used in its first all-electric vehicles such as the Vauxhall Corsa-e and Peugeot e-208. It was originally announced at the Paris Motor Show last year, and remains a platform that can also accommodate internal combustion engines (ICE) as well as EVs. But the motor power has been increased to 156hp and the battery size to 54kWh (gross – net is 51kWh).

That means it’s only a mild improvement over the original 136hp and 50kWh used by so many Stellantis cars, not the new platform generation that recently debuted in the Peugeot E-3008. But Jeep claims to have enhanced its implementation in many ways to improve its characteristics for its more off-road intentions. There’s also a 4xe all-wheel-drive version planned, although Jeep hasn’t announced exact timings for this yet.

The Avenger still has «gas can» taillights, despite being an EV.

Jeep

Rather than just sticking some painted plastic in strategy places and calling it ruggedized, Jeep has placed tough plastic trim everywhere likely to receive a knock or scuff. This material is the same color all the way through, so if you do scratch it, there won’t be an unsightly different shade revealed beneath, and you won’t need to repaint. While this is officially aimed at countryside use, it will be just as beneficial in urban environments and car parks, particularly the trim on the doors.
