Digital trickery: reviewing the new Mini’s infotainment
The new round OLED dials and sound and light show turn the cabin into an animated interior. The Mini Interaction Unit (yes, really…) is Munich’s name for the round OLED display measuring 24cm in diameter and CAR has sampled its graphics in action: they’re pin-sharp and fast-reacting; because the screen is positioned in the classic central location on the dashboard, it can be read by the driver and passengers.
Mini’s designers are balancing modern graphics with a more retro style, including the ability to set the dials into a retro typeface reminiscent of the 1950s original (below). This is just one of eight Experience Modes available, ranging from Core to Go-Kart and Green depending on your driving style requirements.
Whichever mode the screen is set in, Mini has finally optimised the display for a round screen; even third-party apps such as Spotify now fit and work in the circular space. It works well.
The New MINI Interior – Our Initial Take
As you can see MINI has relentlessly modernized the design elements throughout the interior. The mantra of form follows function is played out (almost) everywhere inside the cabin. Save for the faux black strap on the dash (which serves no purpose and is both stitched and glued down) there’s very little in the way of design elements that are directly tied to function or user-centered interactions.
Of course actually being in the all new MINI interior helps bring it all to life. Photos can go a long way but it starts to make sense the more your hands move around the cabin, grab the wheel, open the doors, adjust the vents and hit start. It all feels right from the cold touch of the shift lever to the surprisingly supple vegan steering wheel. The physical interactions feel better thought through than any previous new MINI and additions like the fabric on doors and dash seems like a peek into the future.

The interior revolution starts with eliminating much of what we’ve come to expect inside of a car. Gone is leather, polyurethane dashboards and even that familiar rectangular screen in the center. In their places are more environmentally friendly materials and simpler forms that feel more connected to the classic 1959 Mini than the 2023 MINI this car replaces.

In fact if you look at that original Mini interior and the J01 you’ll see a striking similarity in overall design and focus on simplicity. That’s no accident. MINI designers actually started not with a clean sheet but a single photograph. An press photo of the original Mini interior in all its simplistic glory. But how in an age of screens, technical complexity and countless safety regulations could they achieve a design that followed that same ethos?
It started by taking things away. The original Mini didn’t have leather, it had fabric. It also didn’t have a classic instrument cluster but instead had only a central collection of gauges. And the overall design was focused comfort, storage and ease of production.
Today MINI has many more things to consider. That central gauge is now a screen and while ease of production still matters, so does the circular economy and the ability to recycle 95% of everything you see here.

2024 Mini Cooper EV Powertrain
The base spec Cooper E is powered by a single front-mounted electric motor paired with a 40.7kWh battery pack. The electric powertrain produces 184hp and 290Nm torque. On the other hand, the power figures go up on the Cooper SE. The top-spec variant produces 214hp and 330Nm torque with a larger 54.2kWh battery pack.

The new Mini Cooper electric also features two preset drive modes: Green and Go-Kart mode. The Go-Kart mode enhances the driving experience by allowing the driver to adjust the suspension, steering response and traction control of the car. The mode also adds John Cooper Works-inspired anthracite and red lighting to the cockpit.
2024 Mini Cooper EV Charging
The Cooper E and SE support 11kW AC fast charging. The DC fast charging is different at 75kW for the base-spec E and 95kW for the top-spec SE variant. Mini says juicing up the electric hatchback from 10% to 80% takes 30 minutes at its max charging speeds.
Design
Put every generation of the new Mini in a row, and you could argue that each car looks like a slightly lower resolution of the one before. Grilles become less complex, and the car has gradually become a more distilled version of the original design. With that in mind, the new Cooper could be seen as the most ‘Mini’ version of the model since BMW assumed the rights and launched the Frank Stephenson original.
The overriding vision has been to declutter and simplify the look of the new Mini. Notice how the plastic wheelarch cladding is gone, the absence of chrome and the number of parts going into the door panels has plummeted from 30 to six.
‘Inspired by our history, we have developed our own new design language, defining our DNA,’ said design boss Oliver Heilmer, who says he’s trying to recapture the purity of the original (below).
‘We call it “Charismatic Simplicity.” The idea behind it is a design that gives each new Mini model a strong, individual character and is characterised by a clear, reduced design language intuitively focused on the essentials of the brand.
‘In the front you see, round headlights, really crucial for the Cooper,’ Heilmer told CAR at the new EV’s world debut at the Munich motor show. ‘The grille has the same principle as the original. It is as defined as the first one.’
The Cooper looks back to the 1950s source material, rather than continuing to evolve the previous design. ‘We were like really looking closer to the original in terms of let’s say, surface treatment,’ Heilmer adds.
Parts of the car have obviously been modernised, though: for example, the side profile of the car has been designed to make it look lower and more compact – removing some of the perceived weight of its skateboard platform underneath.
‘Looking at the body side, for instance, where the highlight is running. It’s now lower to lower the visual gravity of the car,’ the design chief explains. The physical centre of gravity of the car is lower too; that typical skateboard layout does have some advantages for weight distribution and handling.
Pleasingly, Mini has bucked the trend of ever-expanding city cars and made the new Cooper shorter. Smaller overhangs than its predecessor at the rear, and especially the front, have made the car more compact, while maintaining a high level of protection for occupants. Yet the interior is 2cm wider.
‘What we did together with the engineers, especially at the front special deformation elements that are more expensive, but they’re able to keep the overhangs short as possible,’ Heilmer told CAR.
First look at the interior
Just like the current car, the new Mini Cooper Electric’s cabin is dominated by a circular display – but this one is a giant touchscreen whose graphics are designed to fit the round shape fully.
Gone are the days of a small rectangular display squeezed awkwardly into an analogue round dial. Here the apps are all natively circular and it shows.
The central touchscreen houses all instruments within the circular display – including read-outs for speed, navigation, audio and phone readings.
Elsewhere, the interior is pared-back and shorn of much adornment. Note the head-up display visible in this image above, plus physical heating controls that retain the classic Mini toggle switch and an interestingly textured dashboard top.
It’s designed to hark back to the 1959 original’s three core cabin elements: a steering wheel, round centre dial and a toggle bar. We’re not sure what a Londoner in the Swinging Sixties would make of the new knitted dashboard – the home for projected light shows and a son et lumière experience depending on the driving mode selected…
A total of 30 new sounds have been developed for warning and information functions and drivers can use ‘Hey Mini’ requests in the newly updated Mini Operating System OS9, which is built around the Android software stack.
Mini showcased part of its new infotainment system at the Shanghai motor show this spring: the British bulldog motif called Spike is being used in China to emphasise the brand’s Britishness – but ignore the canine fluff and this is our first sight of how the centrally mounted dial will spawn a new digital touchpoint for owners, who can run nav, apps and heating systems from the prominent round screen on the dashboard.

2024 Mini Cooper EV Design
Mini is offering the new Mini Cooper EV in four trims: Essential, Classic, Favoured and John Cooper Works (JCW). The differences between the variants are purely aesthetics and features. However, the JCW trim exudes sporty appeal much like the previous JCW Mini versions with enhanced body kit and gloss JCW badging, bonnet stripes and the roof colour in Chili Red — a signature element of JCW models.
The overall silhouette remains the same for the new Mini Cooper electric. However, there are some changes made to the exterior design to feature a lower drag coefficient of 0.28cd. Continues with round-shaped LED headlamps, an octagonal-shaped grille, dual-tone alloy wheels, a roof spoiler and Union Jack-inspired LED tail lamps. The tail lamps now sit flush with the body of the car. Both the headlamps and tail lamps have switchable modes for bragging rights. The alloy wheel sizes range between 16-inch to 18-inch depending on the variant.
2024 MINI Electric & 2024 Countryman Debut and Release Timing
The new J01 MINI Cooper electric and U25 MINI Countryman (electric & ICE) will debut at the Munich Motor Show this September. While MINI hasn’t confirmed production timing, our sources have confirmed that the J01 will go into production this fall in China and will be sold in Europe, Asia and South America initially. Plans for North America are still being finalized.

The 2024 MINI Cooper Electric is nearing its release date
The fifth edition of the MINI 3-Door is nearing its official release, which is set for the next year. The MINI Cooper EV will be available in two variants E and SE, as well as in four different trim levels.
The car will be available in Classic, Essential, Favoured and Johny Cooper Works trims. The colour tones and exterior elements slightly vary according to the trim. For instance, the John Cooper Works has JCW-specific bonnet stripes while other trims don’t feature them. Every trim of the upcoming MINI Cooper Electric will have a distinctive profile. Moreover, the price of the car is yet to be officially announced.
Is it practical?
You’ll not have bought a Mini hatchback for its spaciousness – and the new 2024 model remains a tiddler. We’ve sat in both rows of seats and can confirm the newcomer is very comfortable up front, fine for kids in the back and that you might want to look at the new Mini Countryman if you want more space.
The boot is a modest 200 litres, but you can increase load capaicty to 800 litres by flopping the 60:40 split rear seats down.
The Mini Cooper Electric is our first look at the new Chinese-built EV architecture resulting from BMW’s collaboration with Great Wall in the Spotlight Automotive venture. This is a new electric platform that will underpin every new generation of Mini we’ll see in the next three years, as Munich upgrades its entire small-car range.
Petrol versions will be upgraded to follow closely the new look pictured here – but will, effectively, continue on today’s hardware with 1.5- and 2.0-litre engines and final assembly at Plant Oxford.
It’s a neat way of BMW bridging the gap during the electric switchover and hedging its bets.

When can I buy the Mini Cooper Electric?
The new Mini was unveiled in September 2023 at the IAA show in Germany, with media drives planned for later this year and the first customer cars due in February or March 2024, just in time for Britain’s new 24-reg number plates.
After a quiet few years, this is the start of a major product blitz from Mini: the Cooper Electric was unveiled on the same day as the new Mini Countryman (also available as petrol or electric, but no longer as a plug-in hybrid) and a five-door versions of the Mini hatch will follow, as will Convertibles – again, offered in a variety of powertrain choices.

New Mini Cooper Electric batteries and motors
There are two versions of the new Mini Cooper Electric, called the E and the SE. The E uses a 40.7kWh battery, while the SE has a 54.2kWh battery. For comparison, the outgoing Mini Electric uses a pretty puny 33kWh pack.
This increase in capacity means you can go further on a charge. The standard E has 190 miles of range, a decent improvement over the 140 miles you got in the old car, and 60 miles more than you get from the Honda e.
If it’s maximum range you’re after though, you’ll have to go for the SE with its larger battery. That car will get 250 miles on a charge, a smidge more than the 245 miles you get from a Renault Zoe and over 40 miles more than the Peugeot e-208 can manage.

Both versions have a single motor powering the front wheels. The Mini Cooper E has 184hp and will do 0-60mph in 7.3 seconds, while the SE has 218hp and completes the sprint in 6.7 seconds.
Interior Size – How Does it Compare to the F56?
While we don’t have data from MINI yet, I’m sitting here with my seat all the back and even though I’m 6’2″ my feet can just touch the pedals. If anything it feels slightly larger inside than the current car. That’s perception of openness is certainly helped by the reduction in elements on the dash and in the center console. But more importantly MINI has increased the wheelbase by over an inch with does seem to translate into slightly more cabin space.

The rear passenger seats are very similar to the current ones found in the F56. Sitting behind myself on the back is still a challenge but then again it feels very similar if not identical to the current MINI Cooper experience.
New Mini Cooper Electric interior and infotainment
It’s when you step inside the new Mini Cooper Electric that you see the biggest change, because the design of the cabin has been radically modernised compared to the old car.Check out the side-by-side comparison below.
The dashboard of the new car (pictured above) is covered in a funky-looking fabric, and in true Mini style there will be plenty of patterns and colours to choose from. The funky two-spoke steering wheel is new as well, although there is a strip of fabric which looks like a third spoke.
The centrepiece here is the 9.0-inch circular infotainment system. There’s no display in front of the driver, all your driving information is in the centre. The climate control settings are at the bottom of the screen, and you have voice commands to control most of the major functions.

New Mini Cooper Electric design
The overall design of the iconic Mini was never going to change dramatically, and this new Cooper Electric looks pretty similar to the outgoing model. That said, it has been modernised to keep it looking fresh.
Check out that front end, it’s been simplified for this new generation. The old car (pictured on the left) big cutouts in the lower bumper and a scoop in the bonnet, whereas the new car looks a lot cleaner, a bit like a pebble which has been worn smooth by the sea.
The side profile is pretty much the same as all Mini’s that went before. It still has short overhangs and a chunky, wheel-at-each-corner stance which makes it look more sporty than something like a Fiat 500e.
It’s the rear end which has arguably seen the biggest change over the current Mini. The rear lights have been given a triangular shape for the first time, something which brings this retro-inspired hatchback right into the 21st century. You still get the Union Jack motif, however it now has a cool pixelated pattern, something we first saw on the Hyundai Ioniq 5.

Mini Cooper Electric: launch date, prices and specs
The new electric Mini lands in UK dealers in spring 2024, priced from £22k. Two models will be available:
- Mini Cooper Electric E £30,000, 182bhp/214lb ft, 7.3sec 0-62mph, 99mph top speed, 190-mile range
- Mini Cooper Electric SE £34,500, 215bhp/243lb ft, 6.7sec 0-62mph, 106mph top speed, 250-mile range

The cheaper car comes with a 41kWh battery, while the Mini Cooper Electric SE has a larger 54kWh capacity. AC home charging is up to 11kW, while DC fast charging is available up to 95kW, meaning a 10-80% top-up can be achieved in less than 30 minutes, according to Mini.
