Comfort & Room: 13/15
Despite its unremarkable past, the Sonata always remained competitive on the space and comfort fronts. The current-generation model features a well-appointed, upscale interior with a build quality, fit, and finish that seems a cut above the rest.
Even with its coupe-like roofline, there’s no shortage of room. The passenger compartment capacity measures 104.4 cubic feet, trailing slightly behind the segment’s leader, the Honda Accord. Moreover, there are 34.8-inches of rear-seat legroom, compared to 38 inches in the Camry, 40.4 in the Accord, and 35.2in the Altima. Still, it easily and comfortably accommodates up to five six-foot-tall humans front and rear. However, rear passengers must duck their heads getting in and out.
The SE and SEL get cloth, the SEL Plus and N Line leather-and-microsuede, while the Limited receives full leather. The seats are firm in all forms and a little shy on thigh support, though the N Line’s pronounced side bolsters are noticeably more comfortable and supportive.
Performance: 12/15
The Sonata’s base naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-four with 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque, the midrange 1.6-liter turbo-four with 180 hp and 195 lb-ft, and even the 192-hp hybrid all deliver acceptable acceleration with zero-to-60 sprints in the seven-second range. The eight-speed traditional torque converter automatic is also far more responsive and refined than any of the equivalent competitors’ continuously variable automatic transmissions (CVTs).
On paper, the turbocharged 1.6-liter’s horsepower and slightly higher torque output compared to the base engine may seem unusual. But it’s the way they deliver power that separates the two. The 2.5-liter’s torque peaks at 4,000 RPM, requiring one to work the engine through its rev range to get the most out of it.
The 1.6-liter’s torque peaks significantly earlier at 1,500 RPM, resulting in a much more seamless and refined experience, especially around town. However, it lags behind some of the competition’s top-spec motors, like the Honda Accord’s 252-hp 2.0-liter. But the N Line’s 290-hp 2.5-liter turbo with 311 lb-ft and quick-shifting dual-clutch eight-speed automatic blow the doors off all but the Toyota Camry TRD’s 301-hp V6 and the Kia K5 GT, which uses the same powertrain.
Though improved from past generations’ squishy and uninspiring setups, the regular and hybrid Sonatas have a slightly overly sensitive brake pedal, over-assisted and slightly numb steering, and suspension that’s just a tad too firm over rough pavement to no real handling benefits—N Line notwithstanding. That prevents them from being as rewarding day-to-day as the Accord or its cousin, the Kia K5. But we’d recommend the potent N Line for the driving enthusiasts, which serves up almost Germanic levels of sports sedan handling—a tradeoff we’d gladly accept for that firm ride.

Fuel Economy: 13/15
Both the 2.5 and 1.6-liter turbo return average fuel economy for the class. The 2.5-liter base model SEs return 28 mpg city, 38 highway and 32 combined, while SELs lose one mpg in each measure. SEL Plus and Limited models return 27 mpg city, 37 highway and 30 combined. The high-performance N Line consumes fuel at a rate commensurate with its horsepower, returning 23 mpg city, 33 highway and 27 combined.
But if it’s fuel efficiency you’re after, the Sonata Hybrid Blue ties the Toyota Camry with the best-in-class fuel economy ratings at 52 mpg combined (50 and 54 mpg city and highway) and an estimated highway driving range of 686 miles. Other Sonata Hybrid trims get a still-excellent 47 mpg combined, placing them between the Accord Hybrid and the Camry Hybrid’s upper trims.
Style & Design: 8/10
All members of the mid-size sedan class have gotten the message that plain is out, and the Sonata takes it to heart. An elegant arc sculpts the coupe-like roofline, while the long hood mimics the proportions of a luxurious rear-wheel-drive car.
The result is a very upscale and sleek curbside presence, especially compared to previous models. But the fascia has been a topic of much debate, with some likening the appearance to a catfish. So, while not glaringly hideous or offensive to the eyes, it’s not the most alluring design. That trophy goes to the Sonata’s cousin, the Kia K5.
The interior is equally well designed, matching the upscale vibe of the exterior with a clean, fuss-free, and logical layout.
Stylistically, the Sonata’s rakish profile makes its best impression from the three-quarter rear view. Hyundai
Is the 2023 Hyundai Sonata worth it? Which Sonata is the Best Value?
The Hyundai Sonata is “worth it” based on value alone. Japanese automakers proved they could lead the mid-size sedan segment to great success. But the Sonatas of recent years made it seem like they were all resting on their laurels by offering an equally total package at a considerably lesser price. Unlike earlier Sonatas, the latest version performs admirably from behind the wheel and has a singular style, making it a worthy alternative to conventional choices, especially if one’s looking for more bang for their buck.
However, there are still a few areas the Sonata concedes to the segment stalwarts. For example, it’s not the most spacious (though the difference is negligible, the Accord and Camry feel bigger inside), the ride quality vs performance equation (again, N Line notwithstanding) isn’t as refined as the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, and it’s front-wheel drive only. But if none of this nitpicking matters, the Sonata is still a tremendous value-driven choice in all trims.
Our newfound sweet spot is the Hybrid SEL ($32,395, including the $1,095 destination fee), especially since its hybrid powertrain is particularly welcome in an era of astronomical gas prices. We also love the nicer exterior and interior appointments and the standardized Tech Package that equips all the meaningful tech from the Limited—such as the upgraded 10.3 infotainment system and its feature-rich set—but without excessive optional niceties.
But if you want to stick to the standard powertrain, the SEL Plus also carries the same recommendation, while we encourage driving enthusiasts to give the N Line a serious and good, hard look.
Infotainment: 14/15
The Sonata’s infotainment retains its base eight-inch touchscreen, while the SEL trims and higher get a larger 10.3-inch display. A high-end 12-speaker Bose system is optional with the SEL and standard on the SEL Plus and higher.
Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth connectivity are standard across the board. At the same time, the upgraded system gains SiriusXM, HD Radio, satellite navigation with live traffic updates, and Hyundai’s Bluelink smartphone connectivity. The latter is similar to the competition’s application suites, enabling owners to keep track of vehicle maintenance, anti-theft measures, control convenience features, and even remotely start the engine.
Like the systems found in its Kia K5 cousin, the Sonata’s is very easy to use with high-definition graphics and easy-to-read text. Touch response is immediate, as are processing and loading speeds, making them a breeze to use while in motion. We also love the high-definition backup camera that’s standard on all the models and better than the ones in the Malibu or Altima.

Thanks to its robust list of standard tech, including adaptive cruise control, forward emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-keep assist, and a driver attention monitor, the Sonata maintains its top five-star overall rating from NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), and the Limited trim keeps its Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
All except the base model feature blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking and safe exit warning. Other available high-tech features include a head-up display, the class-exclusive ability to use one’s smartphone as a key, a live-camera Blind Spot View Monitor and remote parking assist. The latter allows one to guide the car into or out of a tight space from outside the vehicle using a smartphone app.
We also love Hyundai’s optional Highway Driving Assist lane-keep assist for being one of the best systems of its kind from a mainstream nameplate. It’s standard on the Limited and N Line.
